The Fabulous Jordan 4 Retro

How the Jordan 4 Retro Became the Cultural Icon:

In the year 1989, in the final moments of the game between the Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers. Michael Jordan had been battling Larry Nance and Craig Ehlo to the death in his last quarter. For this final play, all eyes were on Michael Jordan. Everyone knew that he will be the one going for the shot to win the game. With just three seconds left on the clock, sellers inbound to Jordan, Jordan cuts around Nance, and at the foul line, Michael Jordan jumps and floats in the air over the outstretched hands of six-foot Craig Ehlo, and shoots. In what came to be forever known as The Shot, one of the greatest plays in basketball history. Michael Jordan won the game for Chicago Bulls, defying gravity in a fresh pair of Nike Air Jordan 4.

Back in 1988, Michael Jordan was not exactly interested in continuing his partnership with Nike. But thanks to Tinker Hatfield, Nike succeeded in securing a renewal of their contract with Michael Jordan by wooing him back via one of the most perfectly designed silhouettes of all time. Proving himself to be the only designer for the job, Tinker Hatfield embarked on the journey of designing this sneaker.

In 1989, Nike released the original Air Jordan 4 in four colorways including black cement, white cement, fire red, and military blue. Michael Jordan played one of his best statistical seasons ever in the Jordan 4s. the sneaker’s reputation was further boosted by Spike lee. The marketing campaign for the Jordan 4s saw Michael Jordan and Mars Blackmon appearing together once again in similar commercials, but spike took the sneaker worship to the next level for the 4s when he bought them in his 1989 film, “Do the Right Thing.” He famously made them the centerpiece of a whole scene. Ten years after its initial release in 1999, Nike re-released the Jordan 4 in a variety of colorways like Colombia and the Oreo. this was also the first time the mesh would be removed and replaced with the perforated leather along with leather wings.

The logo on the heel tab in Jordan 4 retro was changed from the original Nike Air logo to the Jumpman logo between the years 2000 and 2006. Afterward, the Jordan brand continued to release retro colorways of the Air Jordan 4, thirteen of them to be exact in men’s and women’s exclusives. Over the years Nike has given some undeniably dope classy colorways of the Jordan 4s. The Jordan brand introduced the retro remaster initiative in 2005 with a promise to make the best retro and also brought back the Nike Air logo to the heals of the retro 4s. Between 2006 and today another twenty-three pairs of Air Jordan were released, more notably the countdown packed fours and Doernbecher fours and some other highly sought after colorways.

Design Details:

This time Tinker Hatfield approached the design with functionality in mind. It can be observed that before Jordan 4, a lot of the design directions for Michael Jordan’s shoes were motivated by the idea of making a luxury basketball shoe. Tinker, of course, wanted to keep the luxury feel, but he did not want it to be the main focus of the design. Tinker Hatfield kept many of the 3’s design elements when designing the 4. Keeping the Jumpman logo on the tongue but this time with the addition of the word flight in a flowing script below. Borrowing the same Nike Air logo on the heel with the air unit. Let us take a look at some of the technical features that Tinker Hatfield and his team added to these sneakers. A new polyurethane over-molded mesh technology decorated the tongue and panels on the upper. Another bold functional element of the four is the sturdy support wings that house the laces at the top of the shoe and near the toe box. This gave options to the wearer to lace their sneakers in eighteen different ways. As for the upper, Tinker Hatfield and his team opted for a synthetic leather called Durabuck. The soles of the Jordan 4 retro remained almost the same as the old ones, but with a slightly higher visual rise in the middle of the sole. Lastly in another utilitarian addition, the four featured the iconic soft pull tab on the heel.
